VICTORIA — Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) is providing a $30,000 five-year annual grant to the Ocean Legacy Foundation to support scrap tire clean up across British Columbia.

Since its inception in 1991, Tire Stewardship has recycled 100 million tires in the province. Ocean Legacy, founded in 2013, is a non-profit dedicated to implementing worldwide programs that tackle plastic pollution, according to a news release.

Ocean Legacy “is the only organization that accepts foam-filled tires from beach cleanup and dock constructions. They remove the foam from the tires and then we’re able to recycle them. Prior to their help with foam removal, these tires ended up in our landfills,” said Rosemary Sutton, executive director TSBC, in the release.

“This funding will allow us to assist more communities in physically removing pollution from ecologically sensitive environments so that we can create cleaner and safer places for wildlife and communities,” said Chloé Dubois, executive director of Ocean Legacy.
