In this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Stantec project manager Olga Gorbunova and Skanska senior project manager Robert Reid about the New York City East Midtown Greenway, an ambitious project which adds waterfront space between East 38th and East 61st Streets along the East River.
The project creates new connected spaces for pedestrian and bicyclists and adds extensive greenery to the area while “closing the loop” of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, which has an eventual goal of giving New Yorkers a continuous walkway system.
Gorbunova explained how using soil cells allows for planting many trees along the walkway with a soil layer within the bridge itself, and Reid explained the challenges surrounding shipping materials by boat and through strategic closures of the nearby FDR Drive.
