The Construction Record Podcast – Episode 261: Carbon capture via wood waste with Ian MacGregor

Journal Of Commerce Image Journal Of Commerce

On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey talks with Ian MacGregor, an energy entrepreneur working to establish infrastructure to convert wood waste into hydrogen while sequestering carbon.

MacGregor’s previous projects include the Sturgeon refinery in Alberta, a $10 billion facility which was also the first bitumen refinery integrated with carbon capture and storage (CCS) as well as the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line. His newest project in partnership with the Brian Fehr Group is the Carbon Removal and Negative Emission Green Hydrogen Hub, a carbon sequestration hub located near Edmonton that will extract hydrogen from wood pellet waste while also sequestering carbon in the ground. Other hubs are planned in British Columbia, eastern Canada and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

MacGregor said the project utilizes technology that is available today and contributes towards mitigating the effects of climate change while also taking advantage of trees as a source of carbon sequestration as they gather carbon from the air more efficiently than anything manmade.
