The Construction Record Podcast – Episode 277: BCIT School of Construction dean Wayne Hand retires

Journal Of Commerce Image Journal Of Commerce

On this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Wayne Hand, the dean of the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) School of Construction and the Environment. Hand is retiring from the position and he reflected on how he joined BCIT, his legacy and some of the challenges, such as the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic requiring schools to completely change how they trained students and prepare them for work in the industry.

We’re also adopting a new format and Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce daily news editor Lindsey Cole joins Warren for a look at the latest news just out and still to come including our coverage of Toronto’s mayoral race, a discussion on how to effectively decarbonize existing housing stock, the recent AEC Cares building blitz in San Francisco and British Columbia becoming the first province to require asbestos abatement training.

Warren also attended the recent American Institute of Architects conference in San Francisco and he gave a preview of some of the stories he’s working on after talking to several different architects about projects ranging from investigating the Champlain tower collapse in Florida to a Montreal project incorporating Indigenous design into the building structure.

We’re also introducing a new segment focusing on the economics of construction, and we have part one of a two-part interview with ConstructConnect senior economist Michael Guckes looking at the current and near-future state of the industry.

You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple PodcastsSpotify and Amazon Music’s podcast section.
