Hamilton, Ont. is getting 16 new water and wastewater projects off the ground thanks to cash injections from the federal and provincial governments.
The recently approved projects will be primarily funded under the Canada-Ontario Clean Water and Wastewater Fund agreement.
The federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for these projects, which totals over $21 million. As part of the bilateral agreement, the provincial government is giving up to 25 per cent of the funding, which adds up to over $10 million and the City of Hamilton will fund the remaining costs of the projects.
"Many of these projects are related to rehabilitating and repairing the aging infrastructure that we can’t see, like sewer mains and storm sewers. While this infrastructure isn’t always top of mind, it’s crucial to ensuring Hamiltonians continue to receive clean water," said Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger.
With the city carrying a $3 billion infrastructure backlog, this recent cash injection will allow crucial pending projects to begin, he said, but the projects must adhere to the condition that they are completed within two years.
With this investment, Hamilton residents will benefit from projects like a rehabilitated Osler Road pumping station, the construction of a new Lynden water treatment system and upgrades to the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant Methane Storage Facility.
This project involves refurbishment and exterior repainting. Federal funding is $2 million and provincial funding is $1 million. A request for tender (RFT) is currently out and construction is expected to begin in the third quarter.
"Refurbishing the methane sphere will allow for continued operation of the co-generation plant at the Woodward Water Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is a revenue-generating green asset for the city," said Andrew Grice, director of Hamilton Water.
Other approved project details include:
the Mountain trunk storm sewer: This project includes the structural rehabilitation and repairs of 400 metres of an arch-shaped concrete storm sewer to prevent imminent collapse. Federal funding is approximately $5.2 million, provincial funding is $2.6 million. It was awarded to Newmarket-based Technicore Underground Inc. and is due for completion in the third quarter of 2018.
watermain structural lining: Internal lining of 4.5 kilometres of metal watermains, up to 400 millimetres in diameter, to reduce the occurrence of watermain breaks and to improve water quality. Federal funding is $3.5 million, provincial funding is $1.7 million. It was awarded to Toronto based Fer-Pal Technologies and is due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017.
wastewater system lining: Lining 20 kilometres of brick, concrete, clay and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) sewers to reduce the occurrence of structural failure and back-ups. Federal funding is about $3.3 million, provincial finding is $1.6 million. It was awarded to Ancaster-based LiquiForce and is also due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017.
construction of new corrosion control building at a water treatment plant: Federal funding is $1.5 million, provincial funding is $770,000. The RFT is closed and construction is expected to begin in the third quarter.
