Hyatt hotel planned for McMaster University’s Innovation Park hub

Dena Fehir

Hamilton, Ont.’s research and innovation hub is soon-to-be home to a new $20-million, 134-unit Hyatt hotel.

Toronto-based development consortium No. 16 Hospitality will construct the five-storey Hyatt House Hamilton to face Highway 403 in the McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) Campus.

The Longwood Road South location is approximately two kilometres from McMaster University and its affiliated hospitals and health science centres; it is also positioned to service downtown and west Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, the Niagara region and beyond, explains a statement.

"Hamilton is one of the most exciting cities in Canada and McMaster Innovation Park is a big reason why. We welcome the opportunity to grow our relationship with Hyatt by bringing their world class platform to a world class location such as this," said Harry Christakis, principal of No. 16 Hospitality.

It was by coincidence that No. 16 Hospitality chose this location as they were unaware that the MIP had been looking to construct a hotel to add to its collaborative space that supports start ups, business and research for various sectors to co-locate, connect and commercialize.

"We’re quite keen to have a quality brand like Hyatt," said Zach Douglas, president and CEO of MIP. "They’re a good fit (and) what they propose will be attractive to visiting scholars and researchers coming to us."

The hotel will cover about four acres of land within the MIP, which is leasing the space to No. 16 Hospitality. The development group will select the contractor in the near future and is estimating construction will take between 14 and 18 months.

The group aims to open the hotel in the summer of 2019 and the project will create approximately 25 full time or equivalent full time positions.

Highlights of the hotel include 134 apartment-style suites that feature fully equipped kitchens; a commons indoor lounge and an outdoor commons with a fire pit and barbecue; the H-Bar casual dining lounge; and a 24-hour gym and indoor pool.

"Hyatt House is the ideal offering for a robust and dynamic market such as west Hamilton and the McMaster community," said Scott Richer, vice-president of real estate and development for Hyatt.

Hyatt House Hamilton will be located immediately north of the park’s atrium building and adjacent to the 403 on an old overflow gravel parking lot.

It is expected to be accessible from Longwood Road South, where the park’s atrium and campus are located and from an existing small extension on Frid Street.

According to George Papas, one of the principals of No. 16 Hospitality, the decision to build in Hamilton was an easy one, as the city appears to be "booming" and the MIP location will bring business to Hyatt House Hamilton with its close proximity to the university, downtown and hospitals.

The Hyatt House brand was launched in 2012 and now boasts more than 70 locations throughout the U.S., China and Puerto Rico.

Toronto-based No. 16 Hospitality develops upscale focused service and extended-stay hotels in under-serviced markets across Canada.
