TORONTO — The Ontario Energy Association (OEA) has released a new Energy Platform intended to encourage the province’s political parties to create energy policy based on three key objectives it has identified.
A media statement issued Sept. 18 noted Ontario’s next provincial election is set for June 7, 2018 and said the recommendations were intended to urge the parties to optimize energy policy.
The three objectives listed were to create an energy system that is the lowest cost, clean and reliable.
"The OEA Energy Platform provides a roadmap for Ontario’s political parties as to how they can deliver on those objectives," said Anthony Haines, chair of the OEA and president and CEO of Toronto Hydro Corporation, in a statement.
The document’s recommendations focus on three areas — reforming the governance of energy planning, optimizing use of existing infrastructure and leading regulatory evolution.
"Ontario needs to update its energy planning governance framework to ensure consumers achieve maximum benefit from an energy sector that is going through an accelerating transformation," said Vince Brescia, president and CEO of the OEA.
The statement indicated Ontario has over $130 billion in existing energy generation, transmission and distribution assets.
"Delivering clean reliable energy at a low cost to consumers requires that we take full advantage of Ontario’s tremendous existing energy infrastructure," said Brescia.
