ABB Campus Montreal achieves LEED Silver

MONTREAL — ABB Canada’s Campus Montreal has received LEED Silver accreditation from the Canada Green Building Council in recognition of its efforts to incorporate green building elements into its new $90-million, 300,000-square-foot corporate headquarters.

Located in Technoparc Montreal, the building, which opened in May, serves over 700 employees previously spread across six locations in Greater Montreal, states a release issued by ABB, adding the campus houses research and development, manufacturing, assembly (RDA) and testing for ABB’s energy value chain in Quebec.

In order to meet the selection criteria, ABB was required to meet a minimum of 40 points and Campus Montreal scored 54. Each point responded to a number of requirements that covers every aspect of a sustainable design including, energy performance of the site, the materials and resources used and the innovation involved.

Some of ABB’s key achievements recognized in the LEED certification process include: incorporating natural light throughout the entire building; open concept flexible working spaces; green garden certified furniture; ergonomic and height adjustable work stations; 11 green walls; increased recycling capabilities; low consumption toilets; efficient heating and cooling including the re-circulation of over two megawatts of heat generated through testing activities in the RDA back into the building; and efficient LED motion detection lighting in most of the structure.

Green elements incorporated outside the structure include the installation of three green roofs and a white roof, to reduce the absorption of heat, on the main structure; electric vehicle charging stations; bike racks for employees and visitors; and a preferred parking program for carpooling and hybrid vehicles.

ABB’s service and product line includes electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in the utilities sector and transport and infrastructure.

Campus Montreal is also home to the new ABB North American Centre of Excellence in E-Mobility. And it was announced earlier this year that ABB would provide an integrated substation for a new data centre operated by Hypertec in Quebec.
