ATCO partners with FLO on Alberta EV charging corridor

EDMONTON – Alberta-based utility ATCO is partnering with FLO, an electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions provider to create the first EV charging corridor in Alberta.

Three fast-charging stations are being installed at Canadian Tire Gas+ locations in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer in partnership with Canadian Tire Corporation and Natural Resources Canada.

Each location will be located near Highway 2 exits, equipped with a Level 3 fast charging station and dual Level 2 charging stations, and will be powered by ATCO. The stations will operational in early 2018.

“The availability of reliable charging infrastructure is a key factor in driving electric vehicle adoption. Although the EV market is still small in Alberta, the development of a charging network is a strong catalyst to support electric mobility, by making short and long-distance travel easier and reducing range anxiety,” FLO president and CEO Louis Tremblay said in a statement.

The project was partially funded by Natural Resources Canada via its Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative, a $62.5-million commitment in the 2016 federal budget to fund new fast-charging EV infrastructure throughout Canada.
