CSA Group releases new electrical code updates

TORONTO — The CSA Group has released the 2018 Canadian Electrical (CE) Code, Part I with 260 updates and revisions to Canada’s electrical safety system.

The code is updated every three years to reflect the latest advances in technology and other major developments, a Jan. 8 statement said. The CSA Group is a standards development organization and global provider of testing and certification services. It consulted with 1,600 in-house technical experts as well as 9,000 volunteer subject-matter experts in revising the code.

“Building on a 90-year legacy, the latest edition of the CE Code enables electrical workers to follow best practices that help ensure safety,” said Mary Cianchetti, president of standards at CSA Group, in the statement.

The updates and revisions serve to streamline requirements, ensure safer installation and maintenance and support the safe implementation of new technologies and renewable energy solutions.

Major changes include:

  • a new subsection of rules for power over Ethernet cables;
  • the addition of demand factors for electric vehicle energy management systems;
  • the installation of an identified conductor at each control location for energy management system control devices;
  • a section on disconnecting means for certain LED luminaires;
  • prescriptions for more tamper-resistant receptacles where children may be present;
  • mandated ground fault circuit interrupter protection for electric heating devices and controls near wet areas; and
  • new requirements to help prevent electric shock drowning.

The CSA Group has also developed training programs and electronic tools to assist the electrical industry.
