MISSISSAUGA, ONT. — The Ontario General Contractors Association and the Corporation Des Entrepreneurs Generaux Du Quebec, along with general contractors from across Canada, recently formed the General Contractors Alliance of Canada (GCAC), a national organization to deal with common challenges facing the industry.
The GCAC will support general contractors operating under both provincial and federal jurisdictions to deal with procurement, prompt payment and liens through the entire construction supply chain and help come up with solutions that work for all parties to make the industry more competitive, states a release. This includes engaging with federal and provincial governments on policy, regulation and legislation.
The GCAC will develop and recommend initiatives that will enhance the effective operation of the Canadian construction industry and provide advice to the industry, government and the public, adds the release. The GCAC currently has 400 members ranging from small firms to the larger, national firms.
It is expected a national discussion on prompt payment will soon be launched and through the GCAC and general contractors from across the country will be able to participate in the discussion.
“Ontario general contractors were important participants in the Lien Act review and Bill 142,” explained Matt Ainley, chair of the GCAC, in a statement. “We will use this experience to support general contractors in other provinces as many are reviewing their lien acts and would like to benefit from lessons learned in the Ontario experience.”
