TORONTO — An infrastructure contract has been awarded to the Canadian subsidiary of Strabag, a European-based technology group, for construction services to build a rail tunnel under Highway 401 in Toronto.
The scope of the work includes the construction of a 180-metre tunnel under the highway to accommodate two tracks operated by Metrolinx. The contract is valued at $117 million.
The design-build-finance contract will be executed under a 50:50 joint venture with EllisDon Capital Inc. in a public-private partnership (PPP), states the release issued by Strabag. The work is scheduled to last until mid-2021.
The new tunnel is rated for top speeds of 145 kilometres per hour for passenger trains and up to 56 kilometres per hour for freight traffic.
“We have been operating in Canada since 2005 and are looking forward to applying one of our core competencies — tunnelling — to this PPP project,” said Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag, in a statement.
