UPDATE: Worker killed after fall at Mississauga Vandyk jobsite

MISSISSAUGA — Ministry of Labour inspectors are investigating an incident in Mississauga, Ont. that occurred the afternoon of Jan. 23 after a construction worker fell to his death on a jobsite.

The constructor of the project is Vandyk – The Craftsman Limited said a ministry spokesperson. The employer of the worker is still being determined.

Peel police identified the jobsite as located at Lakeshore Road West, west of Johnsons Lane. The man, said to be 59 years old, fell from the fourth floor of a building under construction and was declared dead at the scene. Peel police received the call at 3:22 p.m.

Later on that evening, Vandyk issued a statement that read, “a tragic accident occurred at our Craftsman Condominium development in Mississauga, resulting in the death of one tradesperson. We are deeply saddened. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family.

“The health and safety of everyone working on our sites is a top priority for our company. We are co-operating fully with all the regulatory agencies investigating this accident. We will comment again once the investigation has been completed.”

Ministry inspectors attended the scene and issued an order to Vandyk to ensure the route to and from the work areas on the project are maintained at all times in a condition that does not endanger workers, and another that no productive work should take place on the project until the other order has been complied with. There was also a requirement for documentation.

The ministry investigation is ongoing.
