Governments support three Quebec projects

OTTAWA — The federal and provincial governments recently issued three funding announcements for community and tourism-related construction projects in the Lanaudiere, Chaudiere-Appalaches and Saint-Constant regions of Quebec.

First, the federal government will spend $3.9 million to improve the Chemin des Cypres between the municipalities of Saint-Donat and Saint-Michel-des-Saints. The funding supplements allocations from the Government of Quebec and the regional municipality of Matawinie, which will also contribute $3.9 million each for a total government-municipal investment of more than $11.7 million.

The Chemin des Cypres improvement plan involves connecting the tourist hubs that surround the Parc national du Mont-Tremblant in the Lanaudiere region. The route will be built to feature two lanes for motor traffic and a mixed-use bicycle lane.

Meanwhile, the Chaudiere-Appalaches region will receive $8.6 million from the federal government and other partners to support 31 community projects including redevelopment of community spaces, children’s playgrounds, bike paths, hiking trails, community centres and arenas.

The federal contribution of $3.05 million was made under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

Third, three levels of government are contributing a total of $3.5 million to support the refurbishment, enhancement and conservation of the Saint-Constant water tower, a media statement said. The governments of Canada and Quebec will each spend over $1.1 million and the City of Saint-Constant will contribute the rest.

The decommissioned water tower will be refurbished into a wind energy observation and interpretation centre, with the intention of creating a tourist attraction.
