The City of Saskatoon has announced its new rapid transit routes, including a new “Green Line” to accommodate a split in a planned line to expand transit coverage.
“There are notable changes to the preferred route configuration presented in November,” said the city’s director of planning and development Lesley Anderson.
The Green Line consists of a former component of a proposed “Red Line” servicing the University Heights neighbourhood. The new Green Line will go from University Heights through the downtown area and terminate at Confederation Mall.
The Green Line will parallel the Red Line for much of its length to improve frequency along 22nd Street, through downtown and along College Drive, a City of Saskatoon news release said.
“This is a major move toward the implementation of our Plan for Growth. The future transit system is key to providing viable options for people to move around and supporting transit-oriented development along some of the city’s major corridors. This plan presents us with a view of our future transit system in much greater detail than we have seen before,” Anderson explained.
Anderson added the plan also provides further details on how the new bus rapid transit system will function as well as identifying platform and station design options.
The plan also includes a strategy for how the rest of the transit system could be reconfigured to align with BRT, provide frequent transit connections and expand to meet the future needs of a growing city, she said.
“Change is needed to ensure the success of our future system, but it will be done incrementally and thoughtfully, in partnership with the community,” said Saskatoon Transit director Jim McDonald.
The proposed plan will be presented, along with stakeholder and public input, to Saskatoon City Council in the spring. The impetus for the plan was the approval by council on April 25, 2016 of the Growth Plan to Half a Million, which included transit development.
