NEW YORK CITY — Two Canadian projects were among 32 winners honoured last month at the 2018 AIA New York Design Awards symposium held in New York City.
Architect Studio Libeskind and landscape architect Claude Cormier and Associes were recognized for the Canadian National Holocaust Monument inaugurated last September in Ottawa, and architect NADAAA, associate architect Adamson Associates Architects and restoration architect ERA Architects were celebrated for the University of Toronto Daniels Building at One Spadina project in Toronto.
The 32 projects by AIA New York members and architects practising in New York City were awarded in four categories: architecture, interiors, projects and urban design, said a media statement.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture project by Freelon Adjaye Bond/Smithgroup was named best in competition.
The Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design launched the makeover of their building in Toronto in 2013. The Adamson Associates Architects website explains the project involved the transformation and expansion of a heritage building into a “new three-storey complex that serves as a model for environmental and urban design.”
Daniel Libeskind and Cormier teamed up with Lord Cultural Resources, Edward Burtynsky and Doris Bergen on the holocaust monument project.
The elongated star-shaped memorial features a walk-through portion that includes a large gathering space for commemorative and educational activities, 13 plaques and six murals, and there is also a small room for quiet reflection and a terrace with views of the capital region.
