TORONTO — Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne visited London, Ont. recently to announce details of Ontario’s plan to spend $11 billion on the first phase of a high speed rail project on the Toronto-Windsor corridor.
As announced in the 2018 Budget, phase one will focus on the line between Toronto and London, said an April 6 media statement.
Electric-powered trains will move at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour on a combination of existing track and new dedicated rail corridors. The high speed trains will enable a 73-minute trip between London and Toronto Union Station. Completion of phase one is targeted for 2025.
Phase one will include station stops at London, Kitchener, Guelph and Toronto Union Station, with a connection to Pearson International Airport, said the statement. Phase two service will add stops in Windsor and Chatham.
In December, Ontario issued a request for bids to develop the environmental assessment terms of reference for the project.
The contract has now been awarded to WSP and work on the first stage of the environmental assessment is underway.
The government plans to spend $101 million over three years to support planning, preliminary design and an environmental assessment for the Toronto-Windsor corridor.
The government will also spend $170 million on a new Bus Rapid Transit System in London that will consist of 23.7 kilometres of rapid bus transit.
