HAMILTON, ONT. — The Hamilton-Halton Construction Association (HHCA) has announced a special event to mark Safety Week, with a mock inquest planned for May 10.
An HHCA statement explained coroner’s inquests are a tool for public safety, representing a public examination of the circumstances surrounding a death and used to develop recommendations to prevent future deaths in similar circumstances.
A coroner’s inquest is mandatory for all deaths in the construction industry.
HHCA general manager Sue Ramsay said the event, which will examine a fictional case in which a worker is injured from a fall from heights, is an opportunity to learn what happens after the Ministry of Labour (MOL) has completed its investigation of an incident on a jobsite.
“A mock inquest is a really unique learning opportunity,” said Ramsay.
The event will take place May 10 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Michelangelo Banquet Centre, 1555 Upper Ottawa St. in Hamilton.
The “cast” includes Dr. David Eden, regional supervising coroner, lawyers from Agro Zaffiro LLP and Gowling WLG as coroner’s counsels, MOL inspector Wade Feere as an MOL inspector, Robert Gill of RMG Consulting as an owner, Gavin Oakes of MTE Consultants as a site supervisor and Aaron Besseling of Besseling Mechanical as a site supervisor.
