BURNABY, B.C. — The Government of British Columbia recently announced it will invest approximately $7.6 million in a modular housing project to assist the homeless in Burnaby, B.C.
The homes, located at 3986 Norland St., will be built in partnership with the provincial government and the Progressive Housing Society will be the non-profit operator.
Residents will have access to shared amenity space and to 24/7 support services such as meal programs, life-skills training and health and wellness support. Each unit will have its own kitchen and bathroom.
“People need to have access to safe and secure housing. These new homes in Burnaby, like others around the province, will provide the stable and supportive environment that people need in order to get to a point where they can transition into more permanent housing,” said B.C. Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Selina Robinson in a statement.
The modular housing in Burnaby is part of a $291-million investment to build 2,000 homes across the province.
“Because these homes will be for Burnaby residents who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness – people who are part of our community, but who do not have safe and stable housing, I’m confident that this project will benefit not only the people who receive its services, but our entire community, as it provides homes and necessary support services for Burnaby residents in need. I look forward to discussing this proposed project with our community,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said.
Subject to successful completion of community engagement, the City of Burnaby and the B.C. government will move forward on the project with construction expected to be complete by spring 2019.
