SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins awarded US$36M Florida bridge contract

MONTREAL — SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business was selected as the prime consultant to provide construction, engineering and inspection services for the new Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Fla., a US$36-million contract.

The new bridge will be an eight-lane bridge crossing Tampa Bay just west of downtown Tampa.

With an estimated construction cost of US$814 million, the new 4.1-mile span includes four general purpose lanes, four express lanes (two in each direction) and a shared-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians, states a release issued by SNC-Lavalin.

Prior to bridge construction, Atkins will provide construction oversight for interim operational improvements.

The additional lanes and the new bridge construction will be the first two projects of the Tampa Bay Next program, the Florida Department of Transportation’s comprehensive approach to transportation planning and development for an integrated, multimodal regional transportation system, states the release.
