Asphalt shipments, production down in November

OTTAWA — Statistics Canada has reported that shipments of asphalt shingles were down for the fifth straight month in November.

The monthly shingles shipping and production report was released earlier this month.

Statistics Canada reported that shipments of asphalt shingles totalled 1.1 million metric bundles in November, down 50.5 per cent from October and 35.8 per cent lower compared with November 2017.

Production of asphalt shingles decreased 12.8 per cent from October to 2.6 million metric bundles in November, while production was down 22.9 per cent compared with November 2017.

The monthly survey measures production, shipments by destination and exports of asphalt roofing products.

Shipments of shingles totalled 2.2 million metric bundles in October, down 30.3 per cent from the previous month. Compared with October 2017, shipments were 21.9 per cent lower.

Production of asphalt shingles increased 1.1 per cent from the previous month to 3 million metric bundles in October, while production was 22.9 per cent lower compared with October 2017.

Shipments of asphalt shingles totalled 3.2 million metric bundles in September, down 9 per cent from the previous month. Compared with September 2017, shipments were 10.6 per cent lower.

Production of asphalt shingles decreased 1.9 per cent from August to 3.0 million metric bundles in September, while production was 4.6 per cent lower compared with September 2017.

The statistics are not seasonally adjusted.
