Sydney Coast Guard build goes to Joneljim Concrete

SYDNEY, N.S. — The federal government has announced the awarding of a $53.6-million contract to Joneljim Concrete Construction (1994) Limited of Sydney, N.S., to replace the mechanical and sprinkler systems at the Canadian Coast Guard College, located in Sydney.

The work will include the installation of new heat pump technology that will use ocean water from Sydney Harbour to provide heating and cooling to the entire campus, said a recent release.

This new system is expected to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions at the college by approximately 20 per cent each year and reduce the college’s annual operating costs by 25 per cent.

As part of the project to upgrade the mechanical systems, two other construction contracts were also awarded to Joneljim Concrete in August 2018.

The projects were for installation of the seawater pumping system and related infrastructure ($1.6 million) and for upgrades to the mechanical systems at the Louis S. St-Laurent Building ($2 million).
