LONDON — U.K.-based architectural firm BDP Holdings has announced a “strategic investment” in Toronto-based Quadrangle that will turn the Canadian firm into a subsidiary of Japan’s Nippon Koei Co., the parent company of BDP.
BDP Holdings became a member of the Nippon Koei Group in 2016. Four of Quadrangle’s principals will become members of the BDP Group Board.
A Feb. 5 statement from Nippon Koei said with Quadrangle in the group, synergies are expected through leveraging the company’s business in Canada, using the strength of BDP and Quadrangle to enable business expansion into the Canadian market.
Quadrangle was described as a comprehensive architecture and interior design company having strengths in architectural design of commercial facilities, complex facilities, condominiums and more in Canada, with over 200 architects and interior designers.
“Quadrangle supports our strategy to grow operations in the Canadian marketplace and greatly enhances our expertise and resources,” said John McManus, chief executive of BDP, in the statement. “The addition of a 200-strong studio in one of North America’s largest cities will not only provide exceptional opportunities for our people, it will also enable both BDP and Quadrangle to expand our services into new regions.
“We are confident that our culture and ethos will be greatly enhanced by the addition of Quadrangle.”
Quadrangle is currently working on the Yonge-Sheppard Centre, a large mixed-use development in north Toronto; 80 Atlantic Avenue, a wood office building in Toronto; and Downtown Markham, a large-scale mixed-use development featuring retail, housing, office and hospitality, the statement noted.
“BDP is a natural fit with Quadrangle,” said Quadrangle executive principal Richard Witt. “We enjoy similar collaborative and supportive cultures, and a passion for design excellence as a means to creating better cities. We are confident that this union will enhance the value that we can offer to our clients.”
