VANCOUVER — The City of Vancouver has begun to upgrade critical sewer infrastructure along Nanaimo Street between McGill Street and East 4th Avenue.
Work will begin at Nanaimo and Eton streets and progress south in three-block segments, with at least one lane of traffic maintained in each direction during construction.
Work will include replacing the existing sewer with a larger-capacity and separated system, with a pipe for sanitary sewer and another for rainwater runoff. In separated systems, wastewater is taken from homes to treatment plants and runoff water from streets is redirected to natural waterways. The new sewer will have a lifespan of 100 years and work is anticipated for completion in spring 2020.
In fall 2018, the City of Vancouver hosted an open house for the community to weigh in on design changes to Nanaimo Street.
