STEWART, B.C. — RCMP officers in Stewart, B.C. are disappointed with the results of construction speed zone checks conducted in February and March.
During the RCMP’s five separate checks, 33 drivers were pulled over for excessive speed in a work zone. Officers wrote violation tickets and written warnings for speeding. One of the drivers also received a ticket for driving without a license.
The checks were conducted near the Nass River Bridge, 75 kilometres east of Stewart where the province is working to replace the bridge. According to the RCMP, the construction speed zone area is very well marked and is approximately 1.5 kilometres long.
Fines for speeding in a work zone begin at $196 and increase substantially. Violators can also have their car impounded if they drive 40 kilometres over the posted speed limit.
“We need people to slow down in these zones to keep the construction workers safe, they want to go home safety at the end of the day,” said Cst. Rob Gardner with Stewart RCMP in a press release.
The Stewart RCMP also announced they will be making regular patrols through the construction zone all summer long and advised drivers to slow down and drive safe.
You could have come up with a better picture! The Nass Bridge is in the middle of nowhere on a remote stretch of highway.
