EDMONTON — The sun is helping power a fire station in Edmonton.
According to the city, crews recently finished installing a solar power generating system at Jasper Place Fire Station 4. The system is expected to meet 25 per cent of the facility’s annual electricity demand.
“Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is proud to support the City of Edmonton’s environmental initiatives,” said fire chief Ken Block in a press release. “The installation of these solar panels will provide renewable energy to the Jasper Place Fire Station for years to come, and supports our mission of protecting the life, property and environment of Edmonton.”
The 30.8 kilowatt system consists of 88 solar modules. Twenty-six will be installed on the south wall of the building and the remaining modules will sit on the roof. The project is part of the city’s Civic Operations Greenhouse Gas Management Plan. As part of the plan, the city has committed to reduce 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas at facilities through solar panel projects by 2030.
“Reaching our greenhouse gas reduction targets and achieving the goals of the Greenhouse Gas Management Plan will take a strong commitment from the entire organization,” said Paul Ross, branch manager of economic and environmental sustainability for the city. “The Jasper Place Fire Station Solar project is a great example of successful collaboration across multiple departments to minimize Edmonton’s impact on the environment and build a more energy sustainable and resilient city.”
Approximately $23,000 of the project’s budget was funded through the Alberta Municipal Solar Program, which provides financial rebates to Alberta municipalities that install grid-connected solar systems on municipally-owned facilities or land.
Jasper Place Fire Station 4 is located in the neighbourhood of High Park and is the second fire station to utilize solar energy for power.
