What is the future for Alberta’s Upper Smoky region?

What is the future for Alberta’s Upper Smoky region?

GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALTA. — Located in west-central Alberta, Upper Smoky covers more than 13,000 square kilometres south of Grande Prairie and is known for its rolling hills, mountains, forests and glacial valleys.

The area has many different uses including energy, forestry, recreation and traditional Indigenous land use.

Now, the Alberta government is exploring land use planning to help shape the future.

According to a release, the government has developed a draft sub-regional plan, along with associated regulatory details, based on discussions with residents, Indigenous communities, local governments, industry and others.

Albertans can have their say on how the land should be used until June 25. Feedback can be submitted online.

Part of the Upper Smoky plan includes work to restore caribou habitat, which is a specialized activity that helps create local jobs, the release adds. The draft plan also identifies conservation areas and potential direction for forestry, grazing, recreation, energy development, tourism and other activities.

The plan is not final, the government assures, and the content proposed in the draft materials is designed to help generate input.

Alberta’s government states it will also continue working with Indigenous communities and organizations, local governments, industry and others as the Upper Smoky sub-regional plan is finalized and then implemented.
