Feds contribute to seven Ontario water infrastructure projects

TORONTO — The federal government has announced funding for flood mitigation or other stormwater improvement projects in seven Ontario municipalities.

The allocations, announced March 26 and 27, are joint federal/municipal initiatives with federal funding coming through its Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.

A project in Sudbury will support Junction Creek flood mitigation control and improvements that will see the life span of the Maley Dam extended to 100 years, important repairs to the Junction Creek culvert, the reconstruction and improvement of a segment of Junction Creek and a new stormwater management facility. The federal government is contributing $8.8 million to this project.

Another project in mid-town Toronto will enhance basement flooding protection with the construction of a relief storm sewer that services an area of over 75 hectares. The federal government is contributing $37.17 million and the city will spend $82.84 million.

The York Durham Sewage System Forcemain Twinning Project will twin the existing 35-year-old main sewage conduit to minimize potential spills, particularly during storms. The federal government will spend $48 million and the Region of York will contribute $72 million.

The City of Markham Flood Control Project will help protect such vulnerable areas as the Don Mills Employment Lands and the West Thornhill Community from flooding. The federal contribution to the project is $48.64 million and the city will spend $72.96 million.

There will also be flood mitigation projects in Vaughan, Sarnia and London.

The Daily Commercial News will have more on this story in an upcoming article.
