NORTH BAY, ONT.—The Ontario government is partnering with Nipissing First Nation on the $12 million Duchesnay Creek Bridge replacement project on Highway 17B in North Bay, which is anticipated to create opportunities for skills development and local jobs.
The new bridge will be procured through a partnership between Nipissing First Nation and Miller Paving Limited to form a limited company that is majority owned by the First Nation, indicates a release.
Highway work includes one kilometre of paving, replacement of the Duchesnay Creek Bridge and removal of a bridge that crosses over an abandoned Canadian National Railway line.
The Nipissing First Nation will be providing a shuttle service throughout construction during the bridge replacement to provide pedestrians with a safe crossing and maintain the connection between local transit and the First Nation, the release explains.
“This project is mutually beneficial and provides economic opportunity for the Nipissing First Nation community, while delivering on important highway infrastructure,” said Vic Fedeli, Ontario finance minister and MPP for Nipissing, in a statement.
