Filmon to take over as chair of Stuart Olson in May

CALGARY, ALTA. — Calgary-based contractor Stuart Olson Inc. recently announced that current board member David Filmon will succeed Albrecht Bellstedt as chair following the company’s annual and special meeting of shareholders on May 22.

Bellstedt is retiring from the role after 10 years. Filmon currently sits on the audit and human resources and compensation committees.

The appointment is subject to Filmon’s election as a director by Stuart Olson’s shareholders at the May 22 shareholders meeting, said an April 17 statement.

Bellstedt joined the firm’s board in 2007 and became chair in 2008, having been executive vice-president, law and general counsel with TransCanada Corporation.

“It has been an honour to work alongside my board colleagues, the management team and the talented employees of Stuart Olson. Through the different opportunities and challenges, our board has always worked to ensure Stuart Olson would be well positioned to execute on its strategies and build value for shareholders,” said Bellstedt in the statement.

“David Filmon has already made a terrific contribution to our efforts, and I retire knowing that the company is well positioned to succeed and deliver value for both clients and shareholders.”

The Winnipeg-born Filmon is a lawyer with experience in public company transactions, noted the statement. He played a key role in the merger that recently formed MLT Aikins, making it one of Western Canada’s largest law firms.

He currently chairs the board of directors of CentrePort Canada. Filmon joined the board of directors of Stuart Olson in 2018.

“Stuart Olson has built a tremendous reputation for safely and efficiently delivering quality projects that have a positive impact on businesses and communities across Canada,” said Filmon in the release.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on the board to ensure the company’s strategic approach is one that builds significant shareholder value by honouring the Stuart Olson tradition of positively impacting the businesses we serve, the communities in which we operate, and the lives we touch.”

David LeMay, president and CEO of Stuart Olson, said, “I look forward to working with David. His expertise, perspectives and relationships will be invaluable as we build our business across Canada. On behalf of the board, I would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Al for the leadership and guidance he has provided while serving as the chair.”
