Hydro-Quebec wraps $1.3B transmission line

MONTREAL — Hydro-Quebec has announced the commissioning of new transmission infrastructure built as part of the 735-kilovolt Chamouchouane–Bout-de-l’Ile project.

The project’s three components include a new 735-kilovolt transmission line 420 kilometres long between Chamouchouane substation in La Dore, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Montreal metropolitan loop; the 735/120/25-kilovolt Judith-Jasmin substation, located in Terrebonne and connected to the new line; and a new 19-kilometre segment to supply Bout-de-l’Ile substation in Montreal.

The Judith-Jasmin substation will meet the needs of both the 735-kilovolt main transmission system and regional and local demand, stated a July 11 release.

The project carried a total cost of $1.3 billion and required 5,040 kilometres of cables, 1,000 towers and 33,000 tonnes of steel. The total workforce required was 2,500,000 construction hours.

“These new facilities will allow us to meet growing demand in southern Quebec while ensuring the reliability of the entire grid. We’re seeing a major construction site come to a close: the largest 735-kilovolt line project built in the north–south axis in 25 years. Over 1,250 people have participated in the construction of some 1,000 towers since 2016,” said Hydro-Quebec president and CEO Eric Martel in the statement.
