OTTAWA — The federal government has announced funding for cultural-infrastructure and flooding-mitigation projects in the province of Quebec as well as support to help rebuild the downtown of Lac-Megantic, Que.
Flooding-mitigation projects announced Sept. 6 will help protect the cities of Deux-Montagnes, Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, Boisbriand, Saint-Eustache and Rosemere as well as the municipalities of Pointe-Calumet, Saint-Joseph-du-Lac and Oka.
Two projects involve the construction, rehabilitation and expansion of dikes and other water-related infrastructure in the Lac des Deux-Montagnes and Riviere-des-Mille-Iles sectors to reinforce water storage, drinking water, sewer and stormwater systems.
Following the dike failure in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac in spring 2019, another project involves rehabilitating, improving and building up the five-kilometre structure to a height of 26.5 metres before spring 2020.
Total spending on the projects is $49.2 million.
On Sept. 3, the federal government announced $4 million to be allocated to Montreal’s Theatre du Nouveau Monde to expand its creation spaces and reception areas.
On Aug. 29, it was announced that the federal government will contribute $1.9 million towards the rehabilitation of Lac-Megantic. The assistance was granted in the form of a non-repayable contribution under the Support for SMEs and Organizations component of the Lac-Megantic Economic Recovery Initiative, administered by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.
