BandJam prepares to rock and roll in the cash for charity
LEROY SCHULZ - A guitarist shreds at Edmonton’s Starlite room for last year’s BandJam charity event. The event was started by EllisDon employees who plan to make it bigger and better this November.

This fall BandJam is back and organizers say it’s going to rock harder than ever before.

“It’s going to be a bigger show and a bigger production,” said Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson, a director at EllisDon and one of the co-chairs for the BandJam charity event. “We have invested more in the flashbang of a rock concert. It not only will be a bigger experience for the audience, but really empower the bands to go big.”

Hansen-Carlson helped start the event last year to raise money for charity. Construction industry leaders get their garage bands together, raise money for charity and get to be rock stars for a night at Edmonton’s Starlite Room which has seen acts like Nirvana and Green day.

Last year, the event completely sold out and raised $50,000 for Edmonton’s Lois Hole Hospital for Women.

This year, the event will benefit Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS). Based in Edmonton, YESS provides immediate and low-barrier shelter, temporary housing, and individualized wraparound support for youth ages 15-24. It focuses on working collaboratively with its youth-supporting partners on prevention and diversion out of homelessness.

“Ultimately, we aim to walk beside traumatized youth as they heal through relationships,” reads the YESS website.

This year’s bands include ECDC, the EllisDominators, The Pretty Dirt, Red Hot Holospenos, Velvet Handcuff, and Gord Steinke and the Big Stein Band.

“EllisDon’s official unofficial band, the EllisDominators, was formed in 2016 for one reason – to rock,” reads the EllisDominators’ bio. “Since their inception, the band has raised over $30,000 for charity… while blowing over 2,500 people’s minds.  The EllisDominators have embarked on their four date, 2019 World Tour with stops in London (…. Ontario), Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Halifax.”

Hansen-Carlson encouraged those who want to support the event to buy tickets, spread the word or pledge to a band.

“No speeches, come in costume, rock and roll attire, and just come in and hang with industry,” said Hansen-Carlon. “Just a party, a party with a bigger purpose.  I suck at the guitar and I can’t sing, but I do love a good party.”

Tickets are currently on sale for the Nov. 15 concert. Tickets and more information can be found at www.bandjam.ca

The event is being sponsored by MVB Live, SureHire, Edmonton Construction Association, Design Works, Holos, rjc Engineers, Collins Steel, Dentons, JLL, KPMG, MCW, Nerval, Long & McQuade, Be Seen Street Team and Steam Whistle Brewing.
