Calgary Construction Association reaffirms support for city’s housing strategy

Calgary Construction Association reaffirms support for city’s housing strategy

CALGARY – The Calgary Construction Association (CCA) has announced it continues to support the City of Calgary’s housing strategy and other mechanisms used by the municipality to manage future growth in the city and provide affordable housing options to residents.

Should Calgary proceed with its municipal development plan goal of 50 per cent growth in existing communities, rezoning will be inevitable, a CCA release said. According to the city’s own data, 95 per cent of residential grade construction receives approval so the existing land-use designation process is “ineffective, costly of time and resources, and performative.”

The release noted the CCA has heard concerns about parking, height and setbacks and “should the rezoning bylaw pass, we call on Calgary City Council to direct city administration to establish clear, standardized guidelines of public engagement and input required for the various build forms enabled by R-CG zoning, in line with its own Engage policy.”

The Engage policy is an initiative by the City of Calgary to provide a portal for Calgarians to learn about and participate in city projects and initiatives that are open for public input.

“We trust the professionals of the planning and development department to work with the community, do their due diligence, and adequately and contextually apply the principles of planning,” the release said.

The release said new policies and procedures will be ineffective if action is taken on the skilled labour gap, citing Alberta Jobs, Economy and Trade Ministry data that said there were 7,560 construction trades and management job vacancies in the Calgary economic region in Q3 2023, representing one-quarter of all job vacancies (30,500) in the city.

“Further action is required by all levels of government to ensure that we have the skilled labour supply to meet the needs of our growing city,” the release said.
