Champlain Bridge’s final works remain incomplete at deadline

MONTREAL — The consortium responsible for construction and operation of the Samuel De Champlain Bridge Corridor in Montreal has announced it will not meet an Oct. 31 deadline for completion of all remaining elements of the project.

The bridge was officially inaugurated on June 28, 2019 but several works remained incomplete, said an Oct. 28 release. The project consortium, Signature on the St. Lawrence (SSL), now says all remaining elements will be delivered by the end of fall with the exception of winter-sensitive finishing works such as paint touch-ups and landscaping.

The corridor includes the Samuel De Champlain Bridge, the Ile-des-Soeurs Bridge and the federal portions of Highway 15 and Highway 10 connecting the crossing to the Montreal area road network.

Work undertaken since the opening has included continuing construction of the central corridor of the bridge which will be used for the Reseau express metropolitan LRT system, and testing the architectural lighting system on the bridge.

On Highway 15 North, traffic is now flowing on two of three lanes between Ile-des-Soeurs and Atwater and a number of reconfigured access points to the corridor have been re-opened.

Work has also progressed on the multi-use path on the bridge to be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

The final connection of the new path to the region’s existing network will take place in the coming weeks and the path will open to the public later this fall, said SSL.
