Transit projects slated for Durham Region receive government funding

OSHAWA, ONT. — The governments of Canada and Ontario are partnering to provide funding for 11 projects to improve transit in Durham Region.

Public transit users in Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa will benefit from the construction of Bus Rapid Transit lanes with active transportation corridors, states a release, adding cycling lanes and multi-use paths will connect to the transit stations along the three corridors.

Projects also include the replacement of 11 conventional buses with new hybrid electric vehicles; 13 conventional buses and 16 mini buses to replace aging vehicles that have reached the end of their lifecycle; and two additional articulated buses for the bus rapid transit fleet will increase the capacity of the region’s transit system along the bus rapid transit corridor.

The federal government is investing more than $45.3 million in these projects through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan. The provincial government is providing more than $37.7 million and the municipality is contributing more than $43.2 million.
