Date chosen for inquest into construction site death

TORONTO — A date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Gilbert Eid, 44, who died in hospital on Oct. 31, 2016, from injuries sustained while working at a construction site.

Dr. Bonnie Burke, regional supervising coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, made the announcement about the inquest, which is mandatory under the Coroner’s Act, on Oct. 5.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Eid’s death, indicates a release, adding the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future injuries and deaths. It is expected to last five days and will hear from about eight witnesses.

The inquest will start Monday, Oct. 19 at the Coroners Courts, Courtroom A, 25 Morton Shulman Ave. in Toronto. Dr. Mara Goldstein will preside as inquest coroner and Catherine Glaister will be counsel to the coroner.

The Coroners Courts remain closed to visitors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, it remains open for inquest-related matters. Inquests will be conducted by video conference and members of the public can view the proceedings at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA1U8rUGCCrIx5UVZZTupMQ
