NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. — One of the largest capital school projects in B.C.’s history has been completed and is open to students.
The $106.5 million facility, which replaces the old Westminster Secondary school, can accommodate 1,900 students. The facility is 20,000 square-metres and has three storeys.
The old school opened to students in 1949. Officials said it will continue to be decommissioned and prepared for demolition, which will start by the end of the school year. Officials noted that not only was the school outdated but not up to seismic standards.
The New Westminster School Board will lead the demolition project and has been working with the community and stakeholder groups to design a memorial passive park space that will take its place.
The new school was built and designed by Graham Design-Builders LP with KMBR Architects Planners Inc.
The project features seven collaborative work spaces, a 208-seat performing space, modern shop spaces and sustainable energy management systems. The project is seeking LEED Gold certification.
