Manitoba to restore Victoria Hospital with new ER in the works

Manitoba to restore Victoria Hospital with new ER in the works

WINNIPEG – Initial work is underway to restore the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg with plans from the 2024 provincial budget to open a new emergency room (ER).

The project will also reopen the Mature Women’s Centre and build the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre, a news release said.

“For too long, people in south Winnipeg have gone without emergency care in their community after the previous government closed the Victoria ER. We’re fulfilling our commitment to build a new ER at the Vic. Our budget has the funds to begin that work, while also reopening the Mature Women’s Centre and helping to establish the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre,” Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said in the release.

Victoria Hospital’s emergency room was closed in 2017.

The province is investing $635 million in capital projects through the 2024 budget, the release said, including the Victoria hospital project.

A comprehensive evaluation of the capital project will take place including preliminary design work, scoping and project costing. Construction of the new ER is expected to begin within two years, once staffing is secured, Kinew said.
