OHSWEKEN, ONT. — The federal government has announced an allocation of $349,000 to the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation in Ontario towards the installation of a 214-kilowatt solar photovoltaic net-metering project at the community bingo hall.
The solar-energy project will contribute to a net-zero carbon facility while improving local clean-energy infrastructure for the Six Nations community, stated a recent release.
The funding comes from the Partnerships stream of the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge.
Brant Renewable Energy, a wholly owned corporation of the County of Brant and neighbour to Six Nations, was contracted to undertake the development of the solar project using 50-per-cent Six Nations labour.
“We are very proud to have this exciting new project underway. The project will be constructed using a Six Nations workforce, will create internal apprenticeship opportunities, and will enable Six Nations to grow economically while providing a positive contribution to the environment,”
stated Matt Jamieson, CEO and president of the development corporation, in the release.
