EDMONTON — Federal funding has been approved to upgrade major trade corridor assets at the Edmonton International Airport through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
Ottawa announced it would spend $18 million on three infrastructure asset upgrades that will expand the region’s capacity to handle inbound and outbound trade and meet growing demand from the business community to reach international markets.
The three projects include:
- Expanding the airport’s Apron 7 by 47,000 square metres to allow two more wide-body aircraft parking positions, including a new connection between the runway and apron.
- Installing a new hydrant fuelling system that links with Shell Aviation’s new cargo fuel farm. This project is expected to reduce fuel truck traffic and improve turnaround times.
- Constructing 1,400 square metres of cold storage and equipment in the international cargo area to store temperature sensitive and perishable export products.
Federal officials noted the construction phase of the projects would create approximately 360 jobs.
“Our government is investing in Canada’s economy by making improvements to our trade and transportation corridors,” said Omar Alghabra, minister of transport, in a press release. “We are supporting projects which help move goods efficiently to market, and people to their destinations; stimulate our economy during the pandemic; create good quality middle-class jobs; and ensure Canada’s transportation networks remain competitive and efficient.”
