ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Work has finished on exterior, technological and amenity upgrades to the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in Abbotsford.
The work included replacing the aged exterior of campus’ Building A-East. It was replaced with an upgraded exterior cladding system, improved insulation, energy efficient windows and other infrastructure, such as roofing, flooring, lighting and fibre optic networks.
“Students are our future, and the roles they take after studying will contribute to building a strong and resilient economy as we look towards our post-pandemic world,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission, in a statement. “These upgrades mean students returning to campus in the fall in the Fraser Valley can pursue their education knowing they will be studying in a modern building with the latest technological infrastructure.”
Crews also worked to prolong the building’s life with better heating and cooling systems, digital infrastructure upgrades and better energy efficiency. Touchless entry allows access into Building A-East, flowing into the renovated Spirit Bear café area.
The first phase of upgrades cost $7.7 million. Some finishing touches, including landscaping, will done to finish up the Building A-East component.
Crews will now look to upgrade Building D for phase two. According to UVF, this is a larger and more complex project that will implement similar upgrades to those of Building A-East. Phase two is scheduled to be completed by early 2022.
“While we certainly miss the energy our students bring to campus, this project is another example of the work being done to ensure the best possible campus learning environment upon their return,” said Joanne MacLean, president of UFV. “We’re especially excited knowing this targeted capital funding from the ministry will continue to help us engage learners, transform lives and build community for generations to come.”
