Breaking: Construction remains open as Ontario declares third provincial shutdown

Ontario’s construction sector will remain in full operation despite further COVID-19 protection measures announced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford this afternoon.

The Progressive Contractors Association of Canada and the Ontario General Contractors Association both report that the Ford government has decided not to shut down any construction activities amidst other measures it announced today.

The government has declared a third provincial emergency under s 7.0.1 (1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

Effective tomorrow, April 8 at 12:01 a.m., the government is issuing a province-wide Stay-at-Home order requiring everyone to remain at home except for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services (including getting vaccinated), for outdoor exercise, or for work that cannot be done remotely.

Erich Schmidt, government and stakeholder relations associate for the OGCA, noted the order means there will be increased restrictions for retail stores that support construction activities.
