Over 300 participants are expected to brave the bone-chilling waters of Lake Ontario this year at the eighth annual Toronto Polar Bear Dip at Sunnyside Beach on Jan. 1, 2013.

The popular event has helped raise money for Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for low-income Toronto families.

This year’s dip aims to raise $30,000 to help provide affordable homeownership.

“It’s amazing to see so many Torontonians come together year after year for a chilly, but important event in our city,” says Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity. “By making the frosty plunge into Lake Ontario, these dippers are showing their support for affordable homeownership and helping to make a tremendous difference in the lives of hard-working families in our cities.”

Since its inception in 2005, the event has raised over $130,000 for Habitat for Humanity.
