Ken Flannigan, the LEED AEC Solutions Consultant with Imaginit Technologies, addressed the Sustainabuild Vancouver conference on November 28, 2012 with his session, "It Ain't Easy Being Green."

Flannigan said despite the title it is fairly easy to be green, and it starts with the “sustainability frontier” which is the sum of a firm’s best practices and the maximum sustainability that can be designed and measured at a given cost.

Getting to net zero carbon use is People X Services X Electricity X Carbon, and the good news is that only one of those components going to zero will help you reach net zero.

Modelling is key, Flannigan said. New tools and technology sometimes have a difficult time getting into an established design process.

But the critical mass of firms using Revit was reached several years ago, and analysis and sustainability tools are becoming part of an integrated Revit workflow.

Progress has meant we can now get real weather and location data, and you can understand form and how it affects floor area and volume.

Massing also allows designers to show solar stresses so they can quickly redesign and reform to take advantage of solar factors.

Rapid energy models can also be used, and Flannigan said with that approach you can create multiple “one-click” building metrics.

You can now model 2D and #D airflow analysis, which allows for better design that can address windflows and with current software users can vary windspeed and other factors in real time.
