U.S. President Joe Biden has vowed to spend more on upgrading U.S. infrastructure than any administration since Franklin Delano Roosevelt put forward the New Deal to pull the United States out of the Great Depression.
A key part of Biden’s infrastructure plan is the concept of “Buy American” by using U.S. suppliers, contractors and materials wherever possible.
While Canada’s trade relations with the United States suffered during the Donald Trump administration and initial interactions with the Biden administration are positive, it remains to be seen how “Buy American” will affect the Canadian economy. Biden also faces an uphill battle as he must gain approval for his infrastructure plan through a historically partisan Congress and Senate.
