Alcumus launches enhanced version of safety and business intelligence tool

A new tool is looking to unleash the power of safety data gathered by frontline workers in order to improve overall site safety and reduce workplace incidents.

In April, Alcumus, a technology-led risk management solutions provider, brought to market an enhanced version of Safety Intelligence.

According to the company, the tool enables organizations to quickly gain access to and analyze safety information, make data driven decisions and elevate safety programs.

“We want to change it (the current safety culture) from just providing information back to someone, to closing the entire feedback loop right onsite to the workers so they can see the impact of what’s going on. They can see and understand how their actions are changing safety. They can actually make the decisions to help them out in real time whether they be supervisors or workers,” said Tyler Davey, CEO of Alcumus North America.

Davey explained safety leaders across North America continue to face challenges when it comes to aggregating and analyzing key safety metrics but the tool aims to help solve that.

“When we started to look at building out a new tool or a new system, something that we thought could help customers revolutionize the way they treat safety from a data perspective, we started with the core outcome of how do we keep people safe?”

Core features and functionality of the enhanced solution include: real-time 360-degree visibility into your safety program adoption and performance for safety managers, business analysts and frontline workers; simplified management and reporting through a standard set of dashboards based on the most common use cases; and a closed feedback loop that keeps your team and the organization informed on performance.

“One thing we heard quite a lot from our customers is that they wanted the ability to take dashboards out of the system itself and be able to download them and export them in a way that their managers or their customers would be able to consume it outside of the actual application,” said Davey. “We are allowing customers to drop PDF versions of the dashboards into a presentation…so they can truly gain better usage out of the data that they are collecting.”

The new version also boasts a more robust and upgraded BI engine that provides a higher performance system.

“We went with a partner of ours, Google, and their BI engine Looker to help us create better visuals, better graphical experiences and user experiences within the application itself,” Davey explained. “Because of the robustness of what Looker provides us it just starts to open up the door far more towards predictive analytics for us and being able to use this in the future across a multitude of products and solutions.”

The Alcumus team has been studying how data is getting used when it comes to safety in hazardous industries and what makes a company a top safety performer.

“What we noticed is that the top 20 per cent of our customer base tend to make use of data 60 to 70 per cent more than the customers that are in the bottom quartile,” said Davey. “We know from our research that 68 per cent of data just completely doesn’t get used or will not get touched by a customer. When we compare that to the top 20 per cent quartile and looking at how those customers are actually using the data more than their peers or other cohorts and driving safer outcomes we start to understand that there is a correlation between not just data tracking but data usage and data being used to drive decision-making.”

Democratizing data and making it available and usable for frontline workers all the way through to management allows everyone in the organization to make proper, data-driven decisions. Most systems are based on back office reporting, Davey added.

“It’s folks that are sitting in a room collecting all the information, all the forms that are filled in, translating all that information into reports,” he noted. “Then they tell someone higher up than them what we need to do differently to make their jobsites safer. Meanwhile the workers are still there on the frontline making unsafe decisions or doing things unbeknownst to them that are resulting in unsafe decisions.”
