Race car driver Peter Thomson and his wife, Diana, have donated $5 million towards the Toronto East hospital redevelopment. Construction on the 380,000-square-foot project is scheduled to begin in 2015-16. The gift will establish the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre.
The Toronto East General Hospital foundation announced Wednesday that its redevelopment project got a cash infusion of $5 million from race car driver Peter Thomson and his wife, Diana.
The gift will establish the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre, named after Peter Thomson's parents. Ken Thomson was ranked by Forbes magazine as the richest man in Canada and ninth richest person in the world when he died in Toronto at 82 in 2006. Also known as Lord Thomson of Fleet, Ken Thomson was the son of Roy Thomson, the Canadian media magnate who founded the newspaper chain bearing the family name in the 1930s.
"The Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre is the focal point of a ($211-million) capital redevelopment project," the hospital stated in a press release. "In support of this Redevelopment, the Foundation has raised ($48 million) to date towards the ($60-million) private sector goal."
The Ontario Minister of Health and Long Term Care announced in August that construction on the 380,000-square-foot project is scheduled to begin in 2015-16.
It will include an eight-storey building on the corner of Mortimer and Coxwell Avenues in the former borough of East York, about eight kilometres northeast of downtown Toronto.
Peter Thomson's daughter, Caroline, was born at Toronto East General. His brother, David Thomson, is now chairman of both Thomson Reuters and The Globe and Mail Inc. Peter Thomson is a race car driver with Toronto-based Thomson Motorsport.
