YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T.—The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories are funding 18 local road projects.
The federal government will put $37 million into the projects through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Plan. Northwest Territories’ communities and Indigenous recipients are providing over $12.3 million towards these projects.
“Strategic investments in transportation infrastructure help improve local roads and increase public safety. These upgrades mean that families are better able to travel safely to and from work, school and other activities, improving the quality of life for residents of the Northwest Territories,” Northwest Territories MP Michael McLeod said in a statement.
A Yellowknife road paving program is the most extensive at $6.8 million and will involve repair and replacement of asphalt, concrete and appurtenances on 11 roads throughout the city. Tuktoyaktuk will elevate the grade of several roads for $2.25 million and Hay River is rehabilitating one kilometre of road along Capital Drive and Industrial Drive at a cost of $3.9 million.
“Maintaining our roads and highways are of critical importance to ensure the safety and resilience of our communities. Through the continued partnership between federal, territorial and community governments these projects will encourage prosperity in the N.W.T. for years to come,” Northwest Territories minister of municipal and community affairs Shane Thompson added.
