Consulting firm HKA expands Canadian operations

HKA is significantly expanding its footprint in Canada by increasing its teams in Montreal and Calgary.

The consulting firm added nine executives to bolster its Canadian business. With the new hires, HKA now employs 37 construction consulting executives in Canada, including nine testifying experts, making it one of the largest construction claims practices in the country.

“HKA has had a presence in Canada for more than 20 years,” said HKA partner Rick Moffat. “It was always a small practice centralized in Mississauga. But a few years ago we saw an opportunity to grow. Largely the market in Canada continues to be underserved in construction disputes, forensic engineering and construction advising.”

HKA intends to grow its construction advisory services by providing full project lifecycle support to companies participating in large capital expansion programs. Moffat noted demand for services will likely grow as Canada’s federal and provincial governments have budgeted nearly $500 billion for infrastructure and institutional capital expansion.

One of the group’s key hires is Maged Abdelsayed, who joins as partner based in Montreal. A professional engineer with 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Abdelsayed has provided dispute management and claims-related expertise on Canadian and international construction projects.

HKA has also brought on Michael Bodnar who joins as a principal based in Calgary. Bodnar has 25 years of engineering experience in a range of technical and leadership roles, specializing in forensic engineering. With an educational and practical background in fluid dynamics, materials science and fire protection engineering, he focuses on fire investigation and the analysis of other failure incidents, including water loss events. He is HKA’s first forensic engineer in Western Canada.

“The recent additions are to our core leadership group,” said Moffat. “We are establishing the foundation of what can still be a larger group and we plan to continue the expansion. These recent hires have given us the ability to now say that the core leadership group is in place.”

Moffat said HKA is keeping its eye on several areas of the market that they think could be ripe for growth.

“An area that has certainly been on our radar is the east coast and perhaps Halifax,” said Moffat. “We know that Maritime provinces have fairly steady capital and private programs and sometimes very big construction happens there.”
